All things firewood!
Whether you’re new to buying firewood or have been using a log burner for years, it’s not always straightforward to compare what’s on offer.
From weight vs. volume, to moisture content and log sizes, there are a few key things that make a real difference to how your fire performs.
Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what to look for to enable you to decide what works best for your home.
Weight vs. volume.
Why we sell our firewood by volume, not weight.
Firewood is often sold either by weight (tonnes) or by volume (cubic metres), and it’s easy to assume a tonne must mean “more wood”. In reality, weight can be misleading.
The weight of logs changes depending on how much moisture they contain. Wet or unseasoned wood can be significantly heavier, meaning you may be paying for water rather than usable fuel.
By supplying our logs in 1.2 cubic metre bags (and 0.6 cubic metre half bags), you know how much firewood you’re receiving — regardless of weight.
Because our logs are kiln-dried and Ready to Burn certified, the moisture content is already low (typically below 20%) and consistent.
This means:
-
More heat from every log
-
Cleaner, more efficient burning
-
No hidden weight from excess moisture
Simply put, volume gives you a clearer, fairer measure of the firewood you’re buying.
When buying firewood, it’s not about how heavy it is — it’s about how well it burns.
Unseasoned, kiln dried & wood left out in the rain.
Understanding Firewood: What’s the Difference?
Not all firewood is the same. The way logs are dried and then stored has a big impact on how well they burn, how much heat they produce, and how efficient they are.
Here’s a simple guide to the three most common types:
Unseasoned (Green) Wood
Freshly cut wood contains a high level of natural moisture - commonly referred to as 'sap'.
-
Heavy due to water content
-
Difficult to light and keep burning
-
Produces more smoke and soot
-
Lower heat output
In simple terms, a lot of energy is wasted trying to burn off excess moisture rather than heating your home.
Kiln-Dried Wood (Below 20% Moisture)
This is the standard we supply.
-
Dried in a controlled kiln to below 20% moisture
-
Lights easily and burns consistently
-
Produces more heat per log
-
Cleaner burn with less smoke and residue
Because the moisture level is reduced and consistent, you get a more efficient, reliable fire every time.
Kiln-Dried Wood Left Exposed to Rain
Even properly kiln-dried logs can lose their quality if not stored correctly.
-
Outer layers can absorb moisture from rain
-
Heavier again due to surface dampness
-
Harder to light compared to properly stored logs
-
Reduced efficiency compared to dry, protected wood
While the inside of the log may still be dry, the added moisture on the surface affects how well it burns.
Why It Matters
The key factor in all firewood is moisture content.
Lower moisture means:
-
More usable heat
-
Easier lighting
-
Cleaner burning
-
Better value for money
That’s why we supply kiln-dried, Ready to Burn certified logs, stored by us in a way which keeps them dry and ready to use when they are delivered to your door.
